Time To Top Off Our Preps
1 Attachment(s)
In other GIM threads we are gleefully watching Paulson and Bernanke trying to hold back the banking collapse. Gleefully watching Obama promising better schools and free medical care. Gleefully watching McCain promising change. Gleefully watching GM and Ford lining up for a bailout behind all the banks.
In other threads we puzzle and lament the drop in gold and silver. Very soon this nightmare will be at our own doorstep. Our own neighborhood. Polite starving people won't be lining up for government soup like in the 1930s. I gently suggest that it is time to top off our Preps. The hour is late. |
Re: Time To Top Off Our Preps
May I suggest having plenty of macaroni and lentils stored (they store a long time) Plus it is very cheap.

Interestingly enough, I'm at this very moment washing up my 1/2 gal Mason jars to store among other things, 25 lbs of lentils. Just made a Sam's Club run today to get a few more things, and finally got the nerve up to break out the mylar and O2 absorbers for a little bucket filling party (1st timer). Managed to seal up about 150 lbs of rolled and quick oats. Pretty sure I got 'em sealed right... learned from the Wendy Mae vid Avalon posted a while back on the prep thread... I agree that the time is near... lots of things happening this week that should rattle the sheep good... I doubt they will be able to snooze through multiple bank failures/mergers/bailouts... Good luck, all... |
Re: Time To Top Off Our Preps
I've had this really uneasy feeling for almost a year now....way more so than usual. This summer, we have concentrated on more preps than usual ( which is already a lot ).
But the really scary part, is I'm seeing this behavior in people like neighbors and relatives that I personally though were lost causes. |
Re: Time To Top Off Our Preps
Popped by the dollar store today. Lotsa cans of name brand beef stew for a dollar each. Loaded up.
Been topping off all summer. Will continue to top off until TSHTF. |

What with our just-in-time distribution system moving in trailers on the highways there isn't more then three days worth of grub anywhere. Top off next week. |
Re: Time To Top Off Our Preps
I've filled nearly every empty cabinet drawer and shelf in the basement with food and I'm running out of space. Told my buddy, I'm going to have to go buy more shelving :) The five Roma tomato plants have produced enough excess fruit to give me a couple of quarts of spaghetti sauce. That's hardly worth firing up the pressure canner. So I'm heading over to buy the $1.79 a pound hamburger tomorrow. I'm going to load up the canner and make it worth my while!

Re: Time To Top Off Our Preps
i made a food stockup run last friday and will make a few more stockup runs this week...
i think i'll pick up an extra chainsaw this week too and just put it in the storage area and save it...the chainsaw i have works fine, but i want a new backup on hand ready to go...i'll get one that is similar to mine so i only have to stock one size chain, spark plug, spare bars on hand that will fit both... i think i'll pick up another full set of woodstove piping for backup....i have one backup set already, but i have more than one woodstove to feed... not knowing how hard its gonna hit, its difficult for me to figure out what businesses are going to go under and some of the stuff i need for my area may not be readily available to me one day for my remote-like location...so i feel more comfortable having parts and pieces to keep everything going on hand... probably overkill...but i'm doing it anyway... |

anyway i told the shop owner i wanted a comparable model to my old 257 he had sold me several years ago and he outfitted me with my new 359 model, on the right in the photo... http://www.usa.husqvarna.com/product...ls.aspx?pid=97 i have both saws set up with 16 inch bars, because the spruce around here don't get that big so its plenty enough bar and easy to handle...while i was there i picked up a couple extra bars, some files and plugs, and six extra chains... when i asked for six extra chains i could see the guy at the counter raise his eyebrow....like wtf... :D i knew he would...:D that is a lot of extra chains...so tomorrows prepping task will be to go buy a full extra set of woodstove piping... .... |

Re: Time To Top Off Our Preps
thats an antique bear trap...
they make modern replicas of them nowadays for show, but the one i have is the real deal... it was used in my area to trap bears in the 1930's is the story i got from the homesteader i bought it from about twenty years ago...he homesteaded in 1949, so he got the story from someone else... its got the teeth welded on it, but you can't see them from that angle... me and mine are into antiques, and especially the old stuff that came from our neck of the woods... i'm 200 pounds and with me standing on both of the long springs i can't set the trap the springs are really strong...it would take clamps or bars to set that double longspring trap... of course, its illegal to use a leg trap on bears now and has been for a long time, this is just a historical collection piece... still...if the shtf too bad around my place...i sure hope no ones sneaking around my house at night... snap... ;-) |

Regarding the title of this thread:
Any $100 up day in gold is a good time to top up your preps. It says: WTF just happened??? |
Re: Time To Top Off Our Preps
i honestly believe the window of opportunity to prep is closing. just seeing the prices change upwards every few days in the grocery stores is enough to make a person reel or faint. stores sales are not all that great anymore, tho still its wise to take advantage of any sale for items you use or believe you can share or trade.
transporting food is going to get harder and harder, and we will be seeing shortages and blank spots. already i see empty spots on grocery store shelves here and it sure doesnt make me feel good. i hope and pray everyone will take this time seriously and start stocking up, and/or adding to your food storage. learn to can and dry food for long term storage and get the equipment to do so. there is a canning jar shortage here, i cant hardly find the durn things, and i hear the same from other people all around the country. that if you plan on growing some of your food in hard times, do you have enough seeds for at least 2 years in case you have a bum growing year? do you have a way to process and store the food? multiple ways to cook it? do you have enough food set aside in case you DO have a bum growing year? our weather this year was terrible and we were not able to grow but half of what we usually do. if we didnt have extra put up from last years good harvest to make up the difference, we'd be in some hurt. do you have a storage plan, do you know exactly what your family uses of each item for one month, 3 months, 6 months, one year? have you taken the time to put to paper what you will need? even if one is kinda new to prepping food, if you do it wisely you can ensure decent meals for your family. having 300 lbs of white rice and some beans and flour will keep you alive, sure, but your sure going to get mighty tired of it. variety is the key, and having a good plan will help you get to your goal of protecting your family. i reckon im preaching to the choir, and please excuse me if im sounding pushy---but what ive been seeing these days and tying some things together that are developing really is making the hair on the back of my neck stand up. i think we are living on borrowed time and every day from here on out is grace from God to help us get our you know what together. and please, please, get your money out of the banks--dont keep anything in there that you cant afford to lose. jazzy |
